Temporary berthing for P-Arken in Port of Uddevalla

The floating parking structure P-Arken, built in 1975 and with approximately 400 parking spaces, is being relocated from Lilla Bommen in Gothenburg to the Port of Uddevalla. The move is planned to begin shortly and will be divided in two stages. First, P-Arken will be towed to Stigbergskajen for preparations, and then onward to Uddevalla. The sea voyage is expected to take around ten hours. The entire transport will be carried out by tugboats, as P-Arken has no engine or steering system of its own.

The relocation is a complex operation involving many stakeholders and steps. We have been able to benefit to some extent from lessons learned when it was moved to Lilla Bommen in 2017, but much of this has been uncharted territory for us, says Jacob Järpehult Tauson, lead project manager.

P-Arken will not operate as a parking facility in Uddevalla, but will be laid up by berth while awaiting a decision on a potential new building permit in Gothenburg. The City Planning Committee is expected to make a decision at the end of March. The ambition is for P-Arken to eventually continue to be part of Gothenburg’s parking solutions.

The Port of Uddevalla is designated by the Swedish Transport Administration as an area of national interest, which means we receive vessels for temporary lay-up, mooring and waiting positions. In this case it concerns a barge, which is unusual for us, but fully compatible with the port’s function. We look forward to welcoming P-Arken to Uddevalla, Robert Jönsson, Port Captain at Uddevalla Hamnterminal.

Preliminarily, P-Arken will be positioned at the innermost part of Badökajen, in the inner port. The exact arrival date has not yet been determined.
